An Irishman is among up to 41 oil workers believed to have been kidnapped by al Qaeda-affiliated group at a gas field in Algeria.

It is understood the 36-year-old married man is from Northern Ireland and holds an Irish passport.

He was among a group of up to 41 hostages taken during a raid by Islamic militants during a raid on the Amenas facility located in southern Algeria.
