Gogarty stages remarkable return as chart star

Formerly famous as the foul-mouthed Green who thought he might be 25% gay, ex-TD Paul Gogarty has staged a remarkable return to national attention as an unlikely chart star.

Posing under the name “His Sweet Surprise”, Gogarty’s single Know You All My Life has hit the top five on an Irish download chart — besting the efforts of David Bowie.

Gogarty last dominated the airwaves in 2009 when the then-Green education spokesman turned the Dáil air blue with a potty-mouthed rant against Labour deputy Emmet Stagg as he roared across the chamber: “Fuck you, Deputy Stagg! Fuck you!”

Known in his Dáil days as “Go-Go”, because no one was quite sure where he would go next in his often bizarre pursuit of publicity, his current vocal offering is a lot softer in tone than his infamous Dáil tirade.

Go-Go was never one to shun the limelight, as when he revealed that he once had to buy a porno mag featuring men in various states of arousal to decide if he was gay or not.

After a flick through Playgirl Go-Go concluded that he wasn’t, but mused that 25% of him might be gay.

Thankfully, exactly which 25% of him that is has never been divulged.

Go-Go was known for a spate of slightly unusual things like that, such as when he crawled around the floor of a public meeting pretending to have some sort of seizure in order to get attention.

Always the political innovator, Go-Go was ahead of the game on cyberbullying when he tweeted: “You know something I don’t moron?” to a voter concerned about expected budget cuts in the dying days of the disastrous Fianna Fáil-led government he helped prop up as it surrendered the country’s national economic sovereignty.

And now G-Go is back with a bullet at number five on the 7digital download chart.

Though a mere minnow compared with giant rivals like iTunes, 7digital does feed into the official national top 40 and the prospect is fuelling Go Go’s ego as he self-effacingly describes his single as “one of the catchiest of the year” — seemingly oblivious to the fact the year is just two weeks old.

His army of new fans have only a couple of months until the release of his eagerly awaited debut album which will tackle themes such as love, relationships and drug references by Madonna at a recent concert.

Though Madonna is also known for hurling about obscenities, it is unlikely she will feel threatened enough by this upstart rival to ever rant: “Fuck you, ex-deputy Gogarty! Fuck you!”
