Students find new fan with Pulped Fiction

He’s more familiar with Kill Bill than with Killarney, but that hasn’t stopped director Quentin Tarantino from enjoying a Kerry-style redub of his classic film Pulp Fiction.

In Europe to promote his latest film, Django Unchained, the top film director was shown a snippet of Pulp Fiction’s famous scene between Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L Jackson), in which the two hitmen discuss the names of fast food in Europe.

However, instead of the instantly recognisable gravelly tones of Jackson and the slick schmooze of Travolta, two unknown but no less distinct accents emerge from the characters’ mouths.

Since Institute of Technology Tralee music technology students Eoin O’Leary and David Williams made “Pulp Fiction Kerry Shtyle”, it has become an internet sensation.

On Friday’s Graham Norton Show on BBC One, the director saw the fruits of their efforts.

Before the clip was even played, there was a moment of confusion.

“Do you know Kerry?” Norton asked Tarantino.

“You mean the Stephen King novel, Brian De Palma movie with Sissy Spacek and the blood comes on her?” the director replied, looking somewhat confused.

“No, that’s Carrie,” the Cork-born presenter replied before making a comment that might well have irked a few in the Kingdom. “No, Kerry is a bit of Ireland — a remote bit of Ireland.”

When he watched the dubbed footage, Tarantino was glowing in his praise.

“I’d actually encourage those guys to do the entire movie,” he announced enthusiastically. “You have my permission.”

So who knows? Maybe we will soon witness a new gangster films emerging from the “remote bit” of Ireland... “Pulp O’Fiction” as Norton quipped.
