There were jubilant scenes in Dublin last night as a Co Cork school celebrated winning the BT Young Scientist award for the third time in seven years.

Third-year students Ciara Judge, Emer Hickey and Sophie Healy-Thow added to Kinsale Community School’s winning streak by capturing the top prize for their project which could have a major impact on speeding up the growth of crops.

The trio, all 15, looked at the effects of how some nitrogen-harvesting bacteria could speed up plant germination.
