Tributes have poured in for Irish adventurer and record-breaking climber Ian McKeever who was killed by a freak lightning strike while leading a charity climb on Africa’s highest peak.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny joined well-known figures in the climbing world and leading charity workers in describing Mr McKeever, 42, from Wicklow, as a selfless and inspirational figure who has left a lasting legacy through the millions he raised for charities.

Mr Kenny had come to know Mr McKeever in recent years. “I admired him not only for his own achievements and charity work but also for his work with young people in challenging them to achieve their full potential,” he said.
