Media frenzy as Wozniacki puts a ring on it
But Caroline Wozniacki didn’t even have to laugh off talk of wedding bells with Rory McIlroy before the world’s No 1 golfer did the job for her.
Australian media whipped itself into a frenzy yesterday when Wozniacki was seen wearing a huge diamond on her left finger when she arrived in Australia.
The Dane did little to hide the square-cut ring, which is similar to the engagement ring Britain’s Prince William gave Kate Middleton two years ago. She flashed her new accessory when she arrived for her practice session at the Queensland Tennis Centre before competing in the Brisbane International.
But no sooner had speculation reached fever pitch than McIlroy issued a statement confirming he had “not become engaged to Caroline Wozniacki as was originally reported in Australian press”.
The statement added that McIlroy was in Australia to support Caroline in the Brisbane International before heading to Abu Dhabi early in the New Year.
Australian media also reported Wozniacki has been seen wearing a diamond and sapphire band, sparking further speculation that she and McIlroy could have wed in secrecy.
Last month, Wozniacki laughed off speculation she and McIlroy had got engaged when Serena Williams’ hitting partner, Sacha Bajin, played a prank with the tennis superstar by tweeting a congratulations to the couple’s happy news.
