Minster unveils new driving offences

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said he “can’t imagine we could live in a country” where penalty points are wiped because you know a senior garda or are a VIP.

Mr Varadkar said serious allegations had been made that a practice called “squaring” was going on in some parts of the country, where penalties were “written off as a favour”.

He was unveiling a new set of penalty points for all motorists, along with additional points for learner drivers.
