The GAA has said it would be a “doomsday scenario” if the country’s entire ash supply is wiped out by a rampant fungal disease.

Liam O’Neill, association president, said his personal opinion is that the situation will not go that far, but said he was unable to offer any guarantees at the minute.

About 350,000 hurleys are manufactured from ash trees each year, with about two thirds of that figure coming from imported ash.
