McIlroy inspires me, says tennis star girlfriend
McIlroy wrapped up his fifth full pro season yesterday by storming to victory in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. After trailing by two shots with five holes to play, McIlroy flicked the thrill switch to birdie his closing five holes and win by two. In a Tiger Woods like final round kill, McIlroy wore a red shirt to savage his rivals.
“Actually, it was the only last clean shirt I had, that’s the honest truth. It’s worked for the last couple of times but I don’t think there’s anything to it.”
Wozniacki joined McIlroy on the presentation green, but while his season has come to an end Wozniacki’s is gearing up for January’s first Grand Slam event, the Australian Open.
McIlroy will accompany her next month to Aspen, Colorado, and then to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she is playing in exhibition matches before her first event of 2013 at the Brisbane International in Australia.
With the Brisbane event running from Dec 30 to Jan 6, there’s every reason for McIlroy to spend New Year’s Eve in Australia given he begins his new season practice at the Els Club in Dubai on Jan 7.
Having nursed McIlroy through a bout of sunstroke last week, it’s now Wozniacki’s turn to focus on her next big tennis challenge.
“If I didn’t have a job myself I might come out for a few more weeks,” she joked yesterday.
“But it was just so exciting watching Rory today. He had been quite sick the last few nights, and all I gave him was Tylenol.
“However he was really bad last night. It was the worst he was but he got up this morning and it was quite good. But then to see him close out the tournament like that was definitely inspirational for me.
“It’s great to see him doing so well and never giving up. I think he’s matured a lot the last year or two.
“It’s great to see, he’s such a great player — it’s amazing to see. He’ll keep going for a long time.”
