Welfare recipients may see property tax deducted from benefits

Welfare recipients who refuse to pay the upcoming property tax could have it deducted from their benefits.

The controversial move has been discussed by senior government officials alarmed at the mass boycott of the flat rate €100 household tax.

Such a move would see Revenue being given access to social protection files and has been strongly condemned by Fr Sean Healy of Social Justice Ireland.
