Husband says key information missing from hospital records
The widower said repeated requests from himself and his wife for a termination have been omitted from official files, while a request for tea and toast remain in them.
Mr Halappanavar also said a comment he alleges a consultant made that a termination would not happen because “this is a Catholic country” was not included either.
The claims prompted Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin to step up demands for a fresh probe.
Fianna Fáil’s health spokesman Billy Kelleher said the Government was treating the grieving family in a “disrespectful and offensive” way.
“Everybody wants to find out what happened in Galway, but clearly now the Government is prevaricating and they are treating the family with disrespect at this stage.
“We have called for the Taoiseach to meet with Mr Halappanavar and come up with an investigation that will satisfy the family and satisfy the public as well.
“This issue has been badly handled — it is insensitive and it is offensive to the family and we want an investigation that will bring finality to this,” he said.
Sinn Féin’s Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said Mr Halappanavar’s claims showed how serious the situation has become.
“This underlines the distrust that is there between the family and the HSE — we need a situation where there is full confidence in who is carrying out the investigation.
“Mr Halappanavar has already stated publicly that he has no confidence in the HSE to carry out such an investigation — so this means we are going to be in conflict in terms of going to court, accessing information and records, and that is something nobody wants to see, that a family would be dragged through courts to try and make this investigation work.
So lets have one that the family can co-operate with,” he said.
