The cash-strapped county council spent €3.7 million on a 450-metre stretch of road into Ennis which had no traffic use since its completion three years ago.

Now, it has emerged the local authority had no funding in place, initially, to finance most of the scheme. It relied on an overdraft facility to fund €3.2m of the project.
