Make-up of investigation team to be announced today

The Irish Examiner has learned that the specialist panel, and the obstetrician who has been appointed to lessen concerns of a lack of transparency, will be made public this afternoon.

Sources said last night that the list of officials who have agreed to take part was close to finalisation.

However, questions seeking clarification on when the Galway University Hospital and HSE inquiries will be launched, and when exactly the National Incident Management Team was asked to take part, were not answered.

There has not yet been any confirmation over the predicted official length of the inquiries, their terms of reference, or whether the independent expert will head up the investigation or be one member of a large team.

The HSE West confirmed on Wednesday evening that two investigations had been set up to clarify the exact circumstances which led to the death of the 31-year-old Indian born dentist.

The announcement that the Galway City-based woman’s death, on Oct 28, was being examined by two separate inquiries, was made after news of the tragedy spread around the world.

The HSE West could give no timeframe for when the team would be formed.

Savita’s family and her husband, Praveen, have called for an independent investigation into what happened Savita.

They have specifically raised concerns about why Savita was not given a medical termination despite miscarrying for three days; claims this did not happen because Ireland “is a Catholic country”; and the family’s insistence this ultimately led to her death.
