Former president Mary McAleese has revealed she failed to see the economic bust on the horizon even though she shared many worries about the Celtic Tiger with Bertie Ahern.

In a revealing interview on The Meaning of Life with Gay Byrne, Mrs McAleese went on to say she has been hit financially by the recession as she bought her lakeshore Roscommon property at the height of the boom.

The mother-of-three said her children were also among the generation who are saddled with paying over-priced mortgages.
