A delegation representing 85 companies from British Columbia will be in Cork, Dublin, and Belfast over the next few weeks hoping to source suitable staff to fill the rapidly increasing roles in construction coming on stream in Canada.
Abigail Fulton, the vice president of the British Columbia Construction Association, said they will have 200-300 jobs to fill this weekend and thousands more over the next few months. More jobs will come on stream for several years.
“There have been a lot of numbers bandied about on how many jobs there are and those are likely true. However there are obviously Canadians that can fill those jobs as well.
“However, what we have determined is that over the next couple of years we are going to have to go outside Canada for at least 20,000 construction trade jobs in British Colombia if projects that are on the books right now are going to get built.”
She said there were several provinces in Canada experiencing a construction boom. “Most of that is based on major resource projects, mines being built, hydro-electric dams, pipelines being laid, natural gas,” she said.
“As people are brought in for those projects, camps have to be built, towns are growing like crazy... Pay is very good in the remote regions.”
Ms Fulton said demand is cyclical. “For instance right now the high demand is for shuttering carpenters, steel fabricators, and construction plant fitters, whereas plumbers and electricians won’t be required until the spring, but we have to start recruiting and processing applications for them now.”
The delegation will be attending the Jobs Expo in Croke Park this Saturday and Sunday, followed by interviews at the Dublin Hilton in Charlemont Place on Sept 30.
The delegation will also attend the Working Abroad Expo in the RDS on Oct 6 and 7. It will also host its own fairs at the Ambassador Hotel,& Military Hill, Cork, on Oct 2 and at the Hilton Hotel, 4 Lanyon Place, Belfast, on Oct 4.
Those wishing to attend the Cork and Belfast events must register at fswbc.com.
