Councils have the power to take the €100 household charge from other direct supports paid to households who refuse to pay up.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny yesterday referred to legislation and signalled the money could be subtracted from other supports paid directly by local authorities.

Financial supports directly provided to households include payments for mobility grants, disability grants and other housing supports.
