Media tycoon Denis O’Brien has been branded “delusional and absurd” by a former tánaiste.

Michael McDowell launched the attack following revelations in the Irish Examiner that the billionaire businessmen had sent a strongly worded letter of complaint to Lucinda Creighton, the European affairs minister, after she expressed unease at Mr O’Brien being invited to a government reception.

Ms Creighton was unhappy at the tycoon’s attendance at the State-sponsored Economic Summit at Dublin Castle because of the findings against him by the Moriarty Tribunal.
