Women will be forced to sell off their wedding and engagement rings to pay debts under new personal insolvency legislation, Justice Minister Alan Shatter has confirmed.

He refused to consider an amendment to exempt one item of jewellery of ceremonial significance from the debtors law, as proposed by Fianna Fáil.

“One person’s €100 ring is another person’s €200,000 to €300,000 diamond bazooka,” he said.
