When a co-accused, aged 15, facing the same charge was remanded by Limerick District Court on Aug 22, the court heard the alleged crime was sometimes referred to as ‘tiger kidnapping’.

Det Garda Vincent Brick said when he charged Zachery Coughlan Ryan, aged 34, he made no reply to the charge.

Objecting to a bail application, Det Garda Brick alleged they had identification and CCTV evidence for the crime. He alleged the accused was trying to flee the jurisdiction to Belfast when arrested. Mr Coughlan Ryan in evidence said he had no intention of leaving Limerick and had planned for a long time to go to Belfast to spar with a professional boxer. He said he had his boxing kit with him.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy refused bail and remanded the accused to the same court, via video link, on Sep 5.
