A woman is recovering in hospital after suffering serious head injuries in a freak camping accident in which a steel stake sprang from a tent she was pitching and lodged deep in her head.

Steel stake lodged in camper’s skull

Trainee teacher Laura Connick, 22, of Coolree, was camping with friends at the Fleadh Ceoil in Cavan when she got up to go to the toilet just before 5am with a friend. Upon their return the tent was torn down.

Her father, community warden Mick Connick, said: “She and her friend were trying to pitch the tent when one of the steel stakes that was holding the tent down sprung up and got stuck in her head over her ear.”
