Man detained over Galway assault

An 18-year-old Dublin man has been remanded in custody charged with assault in relation to an incident that has left a Galway man fighting for his life.

Shane Byrne, of no fixed abode but originally from Dublin, appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday morning.

Mr Byrne was charged with causing harm to Shane Grogan in Tuam, Co Galway, in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr Grogan, aged 22, who is from Shop St, Tuam, remains in a serious condition at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he is reportedly being treated for head injuries.

Mr Byrne, who has been living in Tuam for a number of months, was granted free legal aid by Judge Gerard Furlong.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday morning.
