Tax take has shown a marked revival with €500m more than expected taken in by the Exchequer so far this year, figures reveal.

Finance Department tallies show VAT and corporation tax led the economic boost for the past seven months. Overall tax revenues for July were €1.68bn, or 9% above the same time last year.

But the Government also overshot its spending targets for the past seven months by some €216m, taking expenditure to €25.9bn by the end of July.
