Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin attacked the Government’s plans for constitutional reform and claimed moves to address calls for same-sex marriage would be kicked to touch until after the duration of this Dáil.

However, Mr Martin was reluctant to give his opinion on possible legislation to liberalise abortion laws and instead insisted the Constitution already provided for the protection of a mother’s life.

Speaking at the MacGill Summer School in Donegal, he said plans for a Constitutional Convention were “underwhelming” and would fail to address core issues that needed reform.
