High Court threat over expenses confusion

The Oireachtas could be dragged to the High Court over confusion surrounding rules governing the use of travel and accommodation allowances for TDs.

Oireachtas officials stated recently that the expenses regime for politicians could not be used to claim back monies spent outside of their constituencies.

Socialist TDs Joe Higgins and Clare Daly, as well as People Before Profit TD Joan Collins, have admitted using the special travel allowance to help campaign against the household tax outside their electoral areas.
