More tests due on body of man found in flat

Gardaí are seeking to have more tests conducted on the body of a 65-year-old man whose body lay undiscovered, possibly for up to two weeks, in West Cork.

More tests due on body of man found in flat

The deceased, named locally as Stanley Giles, was discovered at an apartment in the picturesque village of Glandore.

The rented property was in the heart of the village, at the pier near the Marine Hotel.

The body was discovered last Sunday morning.

Mr Giles, a separated father of three, was originally from Rosscarbery, about four miles from Glandore. He reportedly moved into the flat some months ago.

Garda sources said they are requesting further tests after an autopsy was carried out yesterday at Cork University Hospital by state pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy.

Meanwhile, they have also appealed to the public in an effort to trace Mr Giles’s last movements.

Gardaí are aware he had visited his sister’s house in Rosscarbery on Jun 25 and had been given a lift, by car, at 11pm to his home at Flat 1, Pier House, Glandore.

People living locally said Mr Giles was “a sociable man” who was always up for a chat in the pub.

His body was discovered at 11.15am last Sunday after concerned neighbours alerted the gardaí.

Very Rev Chris Peters, of the Deanery in Rosscarbery said Mr Giles was a long-term parishioner.

Speaking yesterday, he said it was hoped funeral service arrangements could be finalised shortly.

“We have not been able to finalise arrangements as yet.”

It emerged Mr Giles’ funeral service was initially scheduled to take place later today. “We cannot confirm details now until his remains are released to the family,” said Dean Peters.

The planned funeral service will take place at St Fachtna’s Cathedral in Rosscarbery.

Anybody who saw Mr Giles after 11pm on Jun 25 is asked to contact Clonakilty Garda Station at 023 8821570.
