It would be “completely wrong” if the Government’s new personal insolvency regime forced people to sell sentimental items such as engagement rings to pay debt, according to opposition TDs.

“These are things that have sentimental value and to try and lump them in with assets is just wrong,” Sinn Féin justice spokesman Jonathan O’Brien said.

Independent TD John Halligan said it would be “appalling” if people were asked to sell such items in order to “placate the banks”.
