Town stunned after tragic death of 14-year-old
John Coffey’s body was found on Monday by his older brother, Mikey, at their grandfather’s house in Killarney, Co Kerry, shortly before midnight.
His unexpected death has caused widespread shock, and prompted warm tributes from those that knew him. His heartbroken family has described John as always being happy and friendly.
John, who turned 14 in March, was the son of well-known jarvey Johnny and Mary Coffey from Oakhill, Killarney.
He is also survived by his teenage sisters Tammy, Paige, and Britney, and brother Mikey, 17.
He was a first year student at Killarney Community College and previously attended St Oliver’s National School.
John liked to spend time at his grandfather’s house at Coolcaslagh, particularly since his grandmother died, and it was there that the grim discovery was made on Monday night.
The teenager was an accomplished sportsman and an influential player with Killarney Legion’s U-14 team. Club officials said he was very highly rated as a footballer.
John had also been a member of Killarney Rugby Club’s U-15 squad.
As relatives and friends gathered to comfort his family yesterday, Killarney Legion GAA club issued an appeal to parents to inform their children that there are supports available if needed and the best thing to do if they experience any difficulties is to talk to someone.
Up to yesterday afternoon, close on 600 people had expressed their sympathies to the Coffey family on the Legion club’s Facebook page, where many touching tributes have been posted.
