Persistent rumours that Kerry’s main landfill, outside Tralee, is to close have been denied by Tom Curran, the county manager.

He said there was no basis to such rumours and that a report would first be brought before Kerry County Council if the landfill were to close. An €8m extension to the landfill, at Muingnaminnane in the Stacks Mountains, was completed in 2010.

Mr Curran has already told the council there will be a “significant reduction” in the quantity of waste entering landfill in the coming years because of further cuts in the amount of organic waste that can be accepted.
