Courts will be given radical powers to remove public officials and company directors from office if they are found guilty of corruption, under draft laws.

The courts will also have the power to ban these people from office for up to 10 years.

Given its implications on the constitutional separation of powers between the executive and the judiciary, Justice Minister Alan Shatter has asked the Oireachtas committee on justice to examine this provision in detail.
