Gardaí to question man recovering from attack with broken bottle

The victim, a single man, has made a remarkable recovery since he lost a considerable amount of blood and had to undergo several hours of emergency surgery following the stabbing, which occurred on the northside of Cork City on Monday.

Gardaí continue to seek a motive for the attack, which took place in a lane near a Catholic church.

Blood stains were still clearly visible yesterday on the 200-metre long laneway at Hollyhill where the attack took place at around 5.05pm.

Gardaí were yesterday carrying out house-to-house inquiries, seeking witnesses to the attack which took place at the laneway which links Harbour View Road and Nash’s Boreen and runs adjacent to St Mary’s on the Hill Church.

The victim comes from Knocknaheeny and is the fourth person to be stabbed in the city in the past three weeks.

Supt Con Cadogan, who is leading the investigation, said that forensic experts had recovered a bottle from the scene which could have been used in the attack.

He said it appears there were a number of men in the laneway at the time and gardaí were trying to identify which one of them stabbed the victim.

The men are believed to be in their 20s.

“We have spoken to a few people already and have taken statements from them. But we are still appealing for witnesses,” said Supt Cadogan.

Gardaí are particularly interested in talking to anybody who may have been in the Harbour View Road/Hollyhill Estate area between 5pm and 5.30pm.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on 021 4946200, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
