A further analysis of the census showed while the majority of the population has been coping with a mortgage burden, a significant number of people have the debt behind them.
Figures reveal more people own their own home in Mayo and Roscommon than anywhere else.
However, since 2006, half of all counties saw a drop in the level of householders with their mortgage paid off. Laois, Leitrim, Cavan, and Longford saw the proportion of people with their mortgage fully cleared fall by between 2.3% and 3.7%.
In Limerick, Dublin, Kildare, Louth, and Waterford, the percentage of those who had settled all their house debt rose relative to the last census. The largest increase occurred in Fingal, Co Dublin, where the percentage of owners clear of bank demands rose by 1.8% to 23%.
Cork saw a marginal increase in the number of households in the no-mortgage category while Kerry saw a corresponding decline.
Analysis author Marie Hunt, head of research at CBRE, said the regional trends provided an interesting context to the state of home ownership in the country.
However, she said the census figures were too broad to understand the pressures influencing particular areas.
“It is interesting to see that almost half the counties in the country have actually seen the proportion of households without a mortgage increasing since 2006.
“It is however not possible to determine what proportion of the change since the last census is attributable to homeowners paying off their mortgages and what proportion is attributable to the greater incidence of cash purchases in the current climate.”
Ciarán Phelan, chief executive of the Irish Brokers Association, said it was concerned by the fact half the counties saw an increase in the amount of homes affixed with mortgages.
“While it is good to see so many people owning their homes it cannot be overlooked that 13 of the 26 counties in the country have seen the proportion of households that own their homes outright without a mortgage decrease since 2006. This drop in the proportion of households that own their homes is concerning as it implies that those that were close to or mortgage free may have decided to sign up to a further mortgage, possibly to help their kids get on the property ladder at the peak of the market.”
