A fisherman in his 30s who slipped and drowned while returning to his boat in Crosshaven, Co Cork, over the weekend lost his own brother in a similar tragedy just over a year ago.

The body of Brendan Hegarty was recovered from near the pier in Crosshaven on Saturday morning after it was spotted in the water by a passerby.

Gardaí confirmed that Mr Hegarty was last seen alive on Friday night having attended a funeral earlier in the day. It is understood he was returning to his boat when he fell into the sea.
