Two held as man left fighting for life after stabbing in Cork suburb

The victim was found lying unconscious on a footpath and covered in blood by emergency services when they arrived at the scene of the attack in Fairhill shortly before 2.40pm.

He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

The man, who was living in Ballincollig but who is formerly from the South-East of the county, was said to be in a critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Superintendent Con Cadogan, who is leading the investigation, said the victim was stabbed at Kerryhall Road, Fairhill. It is believed he may have been visiting somebody in that area when the attack occurred.

Gardaí immediately sealed off the area for technical examination and are continuing to carry out house-to-house inquiries.

They are also continuing to search for the weapon used in the attack.

Later it emerged that a woman in her 20s “was helping gardaí with their inquiries”, while two men had been arrested.

A man in his 50s was being held at Mayfield garda station while a man in his 30s was being held at Gurranabraher garda station.

They were both detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Supt Cadogan said gardaí were anxious to hear from anybody who was in Kerryhall Road or the general Fairhill area yesterday from 2pm to 2.45pm.

“We know there would have been a number of taxi and hackney drivers in the area at the time and if they saw anything suspicious we would like them to contact us,” Supt Cadogan said. He said that gardaí would treat any information “in the strictest confidence.”

Anybody with information contact Gurranabraher gardaí (021) 4946200, or the Garda Confidential 1800 666 111.
