Historic village to be turned into wedding central
Peter Kelly of Weddings by Franc fame is to open a wedding school, bridal shop, and restaurant in the picturesque and historic village of Glanworth, Co Cork.
He is currently renovating a former mill, which lies below a castle and adjacent to the oldest and narrowest road bridge still in use in Europe.
“I always loved the setting, it’s like a little oasis of tranquility. It’s an amazing place to set up a business,” he said.
He said he loves history and Glanworth is dotted with archaeological gems, some dating back to 5,000BC.
The celebrity planner intends to hold classes for a maximum of six couples at a time to prepare tailor-made weddings within the renovated mill, which will open on May 26.
Wedding dresses and suits, which can be bought or hired, will be displayed in the building which will also feature a restaurant and art and antiques shop.
“An average wedding costs around €25,000, but you can do it for as little as €6,000,” said Peter.
In these recessionary times he can show couples how to save money “by making bouquets out of paper”.
“We will also have a rental store where people can rent anything from chairs to linen and lanterns, which will cut down on the cost of their wedding,” he said.
As the business takes off he hopes it will provide Glanworth with much- needed employment and more visitors.
Cllr Frank O’Flynn, who lives in the village, said: “He [Peter] has many years of experience in the wedding industry... I have no doubt he make a great success of his Glanworth venture.”
