The cost of buying a second hand car and bringing it into Ireland, or registering it in another EU country will be substantially reduced under proposals announced by the European Commission.

The Irish authorities have given the idea a less then enthusiastic welcome, warning it could lead to more form-filling rather than less, as promised by Brussels.

However, the AA’s Conor Faughnan says it fears it could lead to less revenue for the Government from vehicle registration tax, which is the highest in the EU.
