‘No threat of jail’ over household levy, says Hogan

There is “no threat of jail” for failure to pay the household charge or fines related to it, the Environment Minister, Phil Hogan, said.

This was despite comments by the Justice Minister Alan Shatter who refused to rule out imprisonment for people who refuse to pay penalties for not paying the tax.

Just a day before the deadline for the controversial €100 payment, 463,238 have registered. A further 72,000 payments have been received by post, but not yet registered, bringing the total number to around 545,000.
