Doctor faces trial on charges of sexually assaulting women
Dr Kevin Mulcahy, aged 54, with an address at Creggane, Lombardstown, Mallow, Co Cork, was brought before Judge Olann Kelleher at Mallow District Court yesterday, where evidence of arrest, charge, and caution was heard.
Detective Garda Colman Murphy said he arrested Dr Mulcahy at 9.07am yesterday and brought him to Mallow Garda Station, where he was formally charged.
The GP was charged with sexually assaulting a female at a date unknown between May 8, 1996, and Dec 31, 1996, at his surgery in Lombardstown, Mallow, and with sexually assaulting the same female on Feb 15, 1995.
He was also charged with indecently assaulting a second female at a date between Sept 1, 1989, and June 22, 1990, at his surgery at Strand St, Kanturk, contrary to common law.
He was further charged with indecently assaulting a third female on Dec 23, 1989, at a location in Banteer, contrary to common law.
Det Gda Murphy told the court that Dr Mulcahy had nothing to say in reply to each of the charges. Dr Mulcahy remained silent throughout the court proceedings.
Superintendent Pat McCarthy advised the court that Dr Mulcahy was being served with the book of evidence and the DPP had consented to the case being sent forward for trial at the next sitting of Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
Solicitor Carmel Keane asked Judge Kelleher to prohibit the identification of her client on the basis such identification would prejudice what she said would be a “rigorous defence”.
Judge Kelleher said he had no legal basis for granting such an application and had no discretion in the matter.
Gardaí said they had no objection to bail and Dr Mulcahy was released on bail to appear before Cork Circuit Criminal Court on Apr 24.
