Titanic Cobh screening whets appetites for series

An exclusive world-premiere of acclaimed new TV series Titanic was screened for a select audience in Cobh over the weekend — in the very building where the ship’s last passengers boarded before it set out on its ill-fated maiden voyage.

As part of the Titanic100 Cobh 2012 series of commemorative events, 200 guests from the town were invited to view the first two episodes in advance of its airing on TV3 last night.

The impressive £11m (€13.2m) series was made by Oscar-winning script writer Julian Fellowes, of Downton Abbey fame, and consists of four episodes, each one taking a different point of view from various passenger families on the ship.

Screened at The Commodore Hotel, the first episode began with an aristocratic family, while the second featured a middle-class family. Episode three and four move on to the lower class and the workers in the boiler room.

Project director of Titanic100 Cobh 2012, Marc Anderson, said the evening was a huge success and sets the bar for the main week of commemoration events, which take place from Apr 9 to 15.

“The Commodore Hotel in Cobh was the perfect location to host this prestigious event given that this very building was used for passengers coming to and from The Titanic in 1912,” he said.

“Guests really enjoyed sitting back and experiencing the world famous voyage,” he said.
