A coroner is to write to a town council telling it to erect a barrier between a popular walkway and a major river to prevent any more late night revellers falling in and drowning.

Dr Michael Kennedy said he would write to Fermoy Town Council following a series of drownings that might have been prevented if there was proper lighting and a barrier on the banks of the River Blackwater.

The coroner made his comments in Mallow yesterday at the inquest into the death of a married man who had fallen into the river after having a lot to drink.
