A toddler from Co Cork diagnosed as being profoundly deaf will undergo a “bionic ear” operation in Britain tomorrow, becoming the first Irish person to have the revolutionary surgery.

Calum Geary, 3, from Ballyhooley, was diagnosed as having profound hearing problems last year.

He is due to become the first Irish child to undergo the pioneering auditory brainstem implant procedure.
