Reduced train journey times of up to 30 minutes on key intercity routes could be achieved over the next few years through relatively small investment, according to a report on the future of the national network.

The report, commissioned by Iarnród Éireann, also stresses the importance of maintaining investment in rail infrastructure and rolling stock over the next two decades.

The Rail Vision 2030 report recommends that Iarnród Éireann should focus on reducing trip lengths on the Cork and Galway routes through removing speed restrictions in the short term which would see Dublin-Cork journey times cut to two hours 30 minutes and one hour 45 minutes for Dublin-Galway services.
