Enda Kenny has been accused of treating people with “benign arrogance” after playing down fears about the septic tank inspection regime by saying the registration fee was less than the price of a pint.

“I’m quite sure you’re not going to have people spluttering into their pints and saying: ‘Oh God, I shouldn’t have bought this, I should have registered the septic tank instead’,” the Taoiseach told the Dáil.

“For less than the price of a pint in a lot of establishments, you can register the fact that you are a septic tank owner.”
