The €600,000 to be spent by a local authority rounding up stray horses over the next four years has been described as “outrageous”.

Assistant director of Pavee Point Martin Collins made the comment after it emerged that Limerick County Council had entered into a new contract with MCM Security Ltd, trading as ACS, until 2015, with the private firm to receive €150,000 per annum for its service.

“Surely, in these times of austerity, the council could spend the €600,000 much more efficiently and much more prudently,” said Mr Collins.
