Referendum warnings ‘could trigger bank run’

Government warnings that a vote on the EU fiscal treaty is a vote on staying in the euro could trigger a run on the banks, a leading economist warned.

Further budget cuts could lie ahead if Ireland signs up to the EU fiscal treaty, economists also predicted.

Members of the Oireachtas European Foreign Affairs Committee were yesterday also told that the EU fiscal compact treaty would not solve the euro crisis.
