Man charged over fatal stabbing

A MAN has appeared before the courts charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 25-year-old father of two.

Tony Leahy, aged 23, of Sirius House, Cork Road, Passage West, Co Cork, was brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court yesterday afternoon.

He was charged with assault causing serious harm to Jonathan Kenneally Daly at Cork Road, Passage West, Co Cork, on January 19, contrary to Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, 1997.

Garda Martin Lawton gave evidence of arresting Leahy at Cork Road in Passage West at 11.55pm on January 19.

Leahy was conveyed to Togher Garda Station where he was subsequently charged.

Garda Lawton said Leahy made no reply to the charge.

Solicitor for the defendant Frank Buttimer said he had been instructed to apply for bail.

Inspector Billy Duane said the state was objecting to bail.

Judge David Riordan remanded Leahy in custody to a further sitting of Cork District Court today for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Mr Kenneally Daly was found by Gardaí with stab wounds on January 19 on a street in Passage West, just before midnight.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
