LEAVING Certificate students will face less pressure to achieve top grades after Education Minister Ruairi Quinn backed plans for a major overhaul of the college entry points system.

However, the exams could become tougher as the predictable questions and formats that promote “teaching to the test” look set to become a thing of the past. The minister said he agrees with the overall thrust of reform proposals being published today. They include many that can be implemented over the next two years, such as:

* A longer college year — possibly starting in early September — from 2012 to allow greater focus on developing critical thinking, research and study skills, and to facilitate cross-discipline classes.
