Councillors’ allowances cost €1m

A LOSS-MAKING local authority is set to approve today almost €1 million to fund the activities of its councillors next year.

But county manager Tom Coughlan will advise the annual budget meeting of Clare County Council its projected deficit for the current year is €500,000.

In his report to councillors, Mr Coughlan said the factors behind the deficit are as a result of the council response to this year’s adverse weather conditions; unexpected costs concerning Traveller accommodation and increased levels of vacant properties in Clare.
