The Government will be hoping British Prime Minister David Cameron will find a way of maintaining and repairing the country’s often fraught relationship with Brussels over the coming months.

The Taoiseach, who sat beside Mr Cameron during the summit, described him as a “very strong supporter of the single market and our strongest neighbour”, and this was the main issue the two men spoke of on the margins of the meeting.
