Thousands to decorate tree for lost loved ones

PEOPLE yesterday queued to place ribbons on a special Christmas tree in Limerick city to remember loved ones who have died.

Thousands to decorate tree for lost loved ones

Supported by Limerick City Council and Limerick Thomond Rotary Club, names can be written on a ribbon which is placed on the Remembrance Tree.

The tree will become a sea of yellow, with thousands of ribbons fixed to its branches over the Christmas period.

The official placing of the tree was carried out by Limerick Mayor Cllr Jim Long. Rotary’s Eamonn Flynn said the location of the Remembrance Tree on Bedford Row will be a focal point for shoppers.

He said: “It’s a lovely way to remember a loved one by tying a ribbon on the tree in their memory and the tree will stand proudly in the heart of our city centre this December.

“We would be delighted if school choirs and choral groups would use this site for singing carols that are so much part of our Christmas celebrations.”

A number of voluntary organisations will benefit from donations the public may contribute when placing a ribbon on the tree.
