Ireland to pilot hi-tech anti-car theft weapon

A HI-TECH weapon aimed at striking fear into the highly profitable world of car theft was unveiled yesterday and Ireland will be one of first to use it, as Europe battles against criminal trade estimated at being worth €600 million annually.

The breakthrough technology — called Crash Cube and VIN Cube — will go into service as part of a pilot project in Ireland from next month.

The country’s full-time stolen cars squad have been fully trained to use the new, hand-held device, which will reduce investigation time of suspicious vehicles and parts from weeks down to minutes.
